Whalsay came to Baltasound knowing that a win from this encounter could see them clinch the League title in Whalsay against the same opposition at the weekend, and they wrapped up the three points with a sound victory.

Whalsay won the toss and duly played with the strong wind advantage in the first half. This saw Unst, who were missing the influential Thomson brothers, having to defend aplenty though the half wasn’t as one sided as anticipated.

Both teams had their fair share of chances with Unst’s McGregor and Laurenson both bearing down on the goal only to see Grant Thomson in the Whalsay goal in fine form and holding them out.

Whalsay though, looked dangerous at set plays and it was through two corners that they found themselves two goals to the good at half time. The first was whipped in and Montgomery powered home from close range. The second was swung in by Pearson and the young Unst goalkeeper didn’t get his body behind the ball and unfortunately for Unst, knocked the ball over the line.

Unst were still in the game at the start of the second half and believed that with the wind at their backs, the game wasn’t beyond them. Darren Thomson for the home team had a vicious drive from 35 yards fumbled clear for a corner and Unst continued to apply some early pressure.

This led to the game opening up and Whalsay were able to play some good counter attack football. It was through this style of play that Whalsay scored the decisive third goal which effectively ended the tie; Pearson was sent clear and found himself on-on-one and fired the ball home past the Unst keeper.

The fourth goal was a good move by the away team, who broke away down the right flank, squaring the ball on the 6 yard box for Stuart Shearer to slot home. The fifth and final goal was from the penalty spot; Unst’s Ashley Spence rashly taking little of the ball and a great deal of Brian Irvine inside the penalty area. It was Pearson for Whalsay who stepped up and slotted the ball home from the spot.
